The Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal) is a cutting-edge institute addressing global public health challenges through research, translation into policy and education. WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

ISGlobal is seeking a microbiologist for the Tuberculosis (TB) laboratory, under the supervision of Dr. Alberto García-Basteiro.

The TB group brings together clinical, epidemiological, diagnostic, and laboratory expertise to advance tuberculosis research across a portfolio of projects conducted in Mozambique and in collaboration with international partners. Rather than being tied to a single study, this position will provide technical and quality oversight for the mycobacteriology laboratory across the group's projects, ensuring that laboratory procedures meet international standards and support the group's diagnostic, clinical, and epidemiological research activities.

The ideal candidate will have experience in mycobacteriology laboratory work, with strong skills in technical training and supervision, quality assurance, and coordination with research teams and field sites.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Ensure the training and technical-scientific support of staff in the mycobacteriology area.

• Ensure the technical quality of the procedures carried out in the area.

• Ensure that appropriate techniques are used in line with international standards and the needs of research projects and ensure the correct implementation of new techniques not yet in use in the laboratory.

• Ensure the technical and scientific quality of mycobacteriology laboratory procedures, including monitoring quality indicators and implementing corrective measures.

• Adapt and implement new laboratory techniques in line with international standards and the needs of the group's research projects.

• Provide technical training and support to laboratory staff, and guide the interpretation of results generated in the area.

• Identify staff training needs and lead technical-scientific sessions to strengthen the team's laboratory capacity.

• Represent the laboratory's technical-scientific perspective in laboratory meetings and coordination with the Laboratory Manager.

TASKS TO BE PERFORMED

• Identify and monitor quality indicators for the area and propose and implement corrective measures to address any deviations in quality indicators.

• Propose adjustments to the techniques used in line with international standards and the state of the art, as well as with the needs of the research projects carried out at the Centre.

• Implement new techniques according to the laboratory's needs.

• Train and provide technical support to the Laboratory Manager.

• Ensure the correct interpretation of results generated in the area and clarify any interpretation queries for the area manager.

• Identify training needs and propose measures to address them.

• Guide and support area technicians in preparing technical-scientific topics for presentation at laboratory meetings.

• Prepare and lead technical-scientific sessions to improve the technical knowledge of area technicians and promote a culture of technical discussion of results.

• Participate in all laboratory meetings with a technical-scientific component related to their area.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE / QUALIFICATIONS

• University degree. Relevant postgraduate training will be valued.

• Training in microbiology. Completion of a specialisation in Clinical Microbiology will be highly valued.

• Participation in research projects, particularly in the field of tuberculosis, will be valued.

• Demonstrated experience in mycobacteriology laboratories.

• Proven team management and leadership skills.

SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS

• Fluency in English and Spanish. Fluency in Portuguese will be highly valued.

• Experience and knowledge in Global Health-related topics will be valued.

• Availability to live in Mozambique. Availability to travel and undertake short/medium-term stays abroad/in the field.

LANGUAGE LEVEL

• Fluency in English and Spanish. Fluency in Portuguese will be highly valued.

CONDITIONS

• Contract: full time. This is an initial 12-month position with the possibility of extension

• Salary: According to ISGlobal internal salary scale

• Work-Life Balance: 36 days off per year (23 vacation days + 13 personal days)

SELECTION PROCESS

The selection process is designed in two phases:
1- Interview phase of a technical nature, with the team that requires the incorporation. To assess the person's skills and CV.
2 - Meeting with HR with the finalist(s) to finish assessing the profile and discuss contractual and institutional issues.

If needed any technical test could be passed. A Psychological Competency Evaluation Test will be required for the structural or transversal positions.

In accordance with the OTM-R principles, a gender-balanced recruitment panel is formed for every vacancy at the beginning of the process.
